Almost entirely on singletrack, this race showcases a great deal of what Wompatuck has to offer. You will see a variety of trail situations as well as many of the historic features of the park from when this land was used as grazing grounds in the 1800s and a military compound from 1941-1962. Over the 25 miles you will encounter rocks, roots, berms, pavement (minimal), fast and slow trails, etc. Although your head will likely be down and you may miss it, you will also be riding by, through, or over old bunkers, blasting walls, railway beds, and stone walls. This course takes you through the best of New England mountain biking!
The Landmine Mountain Bike Classic attracts over 500 racers. This is more than 2x the normal number of racers for XC New England Mountain Bike races (including Root 66 and EFTA series races). And for you math geeks like us, the mean for racers in New England (as of July 2016) is 227 participants and the median is 205. See, we didn't just make up that 2x bigger statement. Also, since we have a 25-mile course, we're able to put everyone on it at once. Thus, our mass starts generate a lot of crowd enthusiasm! We also run an awesome FREE kids race (i.e. we don't make the kids do laps in grass or gravel in the parking lot). Our kids race course is a closed-cicuit loop near our main staging area and is open all day for families to enjoy.
We put a lot of effort into making sure your day in Wompatuck is excellent and we strive to bring a level of professionalism to Landmine uncharacteristic of events run entirely by volunteers. All year long we have volunteers maintaining and repairing trails with Landmine in mind. Our feed zones have enthusiastic staff. Since we are a single-lap race, it also takes numerous volunteers to mark our entire 25-mile course. Our parking team will also have you parked quickly and with ease. And our registration team is so good you'd almost think they're professionals.
We strive to strike a balance between making sure this race is affordable and a good value while not forgetting that all our proceeds benefit Wompatuck State Park. On a miles per dollar scale, this race is a very good deal for you. In particular, our marathon class is only $0.80/mile --the cheapest marathon race you'll find anywhere! We also offer $10 off regular entry fees for all Juniors (ages 12-18).
As you have come to expect, the Friends of Wompatuck covers the Bikereg.com fees. With no Bikereg.com fees on top of your race fee, what you see is what you pay.
